Large cities surround giant crystals that jut from the ground, few and far between, they are the most valuable and guarded things in the land. The crystals radiate a magical field that keeps the Mana Hounds at bay, unable to cross their threshold. The size of this protective zone depends on the size of the crystal. Therefor cities have been formed around them, with their city walls resting just inside the edge of the magical protection. Outside of this area the world is a rougher place, with most civilizations never getting past the size of a small town/hamlet. Small towns surrounded by farms, or small fishing villages on the banks of the ocean/rivers, are the most common. Several nomadic tribes still roam the lands following the herds. The cities are a stark contrast to those outside, being full of grand towering buildings with bustling streets and strange magics, unseen outside the walls.

Magic still works outside the city walls, and most magical items are fine, the casting of spells, whether from scroll, wand or wizard, is sure to bring a Mana Hound or two. While inside the city walls, magic is a daily thing that most everybody has some way of using, whether from scrolls, wands or magical training. Life between the two worlds is very different, but both have their challenges and rewards.
